• Makes appropriate verbal responses to some requests e.g. ‘Say bye-bye’
• ‘Talks’ to people and toys in long tuneful stretches
• Uses 1-3 words or word-like sounds with a degree of consistency
• Vocalises in response to being spoken to
• Uses combination of looking, gesture and vocalisation or word to make requests, comment or protest
• Demonstrates appropriate but fleeting use of toys and objects e.g. touches comb to hair; puts blanket on doll in crib but only covers doll ’s face
