Hello! I’m Belinda Buckley MRCSLT, the founder of Children’s Speech & Language Therapy Ltd, the author of Children’s Communication Skills from Birth to Five (Routledge 2003) and a dedicated speech and language therapist (SLT) with over 20 years’ experience.

Are you a parent, nursery or school seeking speech and language therapy support?

I provide speech and language therapy services to schools in Essex and London.

Mission

I’m passionate about changing children’s lives by helping them become effective communicators and developing their confidence to express themselves to their maximum potential. I work closely with parents and teachers towards these goals.

I promise you consistency, professionalism, understanding and effective support.

Publication

My book, Children’s Communication Skills from Birth to Five, is used by parents, teachers and other professionals for in-depth but accessible information on children’s speech and language development.

Skills and Experience

I have specialist skills in assessing and treating speech delays and disorders, developmental language disorder (DLD), language disorders in association with other conditions, autism and related communication challenges. I’ve established a preventative early years service, provided school training sessions and delivered assessments and treatment in my clinic, mainstream and specialist settings for children with autistic spectrum disorder, learning disabilities and emotional and behavioural needs.

Every year since 1996 when I earned my first class degree with honours from University College London (UCL) I’ve gone on to complete continual professional development and collected a huge library of resources and manuals which I make available to clients.  Additional training and learning has enabled me to deliver a raft of evidence-based interventions such as:

  • COLOURFUL SEMANTICS
  • SHAPE CODING – teaching spoken and written grammar to school-aged children with DLD (Developmental Language Disorder)
  • PECS – Picture Exchange Communication System
  • TEACHH – Treatment of Autistic and Communication-Handicapped Children, includes assessment and setting objectives, creating visual structure and implementing evidence-based strategies to facilitate learning
  • Makaton signing
  • Rinaldi LANGUAGE CONCEPTS TO ACCESS LEARNING – supporting learning of essential vocabulary and concepts for Mathematics, Science and Geography
  • SCERTS – Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support for children with Autism and Social Communication needs. A research-based model of assessment and intervention.
  • SOCIAL STORIES and  COMIC STRIP CONVERSATIONS supporting children with autism and related needs to develop social understanding and facilitate behaviour change.
  • NUFFIELD CENTRE DYSPRAXIA PROGRAMME – supporting children with speech disorders.
  • Non-Verbal Play Therapy – influenced by Donald Winnicott and Margaret Lowenfeld – supporting children’s early language, attention, communication and play development.

This website is for parents, teachers and others interested in speech, language and communication development in children, and in the difficulties some children have in developing these skills.

Speech and language therapy can help children overcome many of these difficulties. You can learn more about it on this website.

When not delivering speech and language therapy I practice yoga, write fiction, walk in the forest and relax with my family and friends. I’ve lived in Spain, Japan, Australia, France and Germany and travelled in the US, Brazil, Africa, Papua New Guinea, Oman, continental Europe and S.E. Asia.

The service strives to keep a low carbon footprint and I usually cycle to local clients and take public transport to those further afield.

I knew Belinda as a student SLT and it is unsurprising to me that she has gone on to write a book. Her book is easy to read, comprehensive and a must for SLT students or similar and practising SLTs and language teachers alike. For those who are longer in the tooth practising SLTs don’t dismiss this book as it is an excellent reference for those who just want to give themselves a quick reminder of what language skills emerge when.

This book is a really easy read. It explains stuff well and has normal development for ages set out in lovely tables, along with warning signs. I would definitely recommend it to anyone studying child communication development. I’m an SLT student
